عنْ عَائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهَا قالتْ: رأَيْتُ رسولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ وهُوَ بِالموتِ، عِنْدَهُ قَدَحٌ فِيهِ مَاءٌ، وهُوَ يُدْخِلُ يدَهُ في القَدَحِ، ثُمَّ يمسَحُ وجْهَهُ بالماءِ ثُمَّ يقولُ: «اللَّهُمَّ؛ أَعِنِّي على غمرَاتِ الموْتِ وَسَكَراتِ المَوْتِ» رواهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was in the throes of death. Beside him was a cup containing water, and he would put his hand in the cup and then wipe his face with the water, then say: "O Allah, help me against the agonies of death and the throes of death." Reported by al-Tirmidhi.
الشرح · explanation
بالموت: أي عليه علاماته. غمرات الموت: شدائد الموت. سكرات الموت: شدائده التي تفقد الوعي.
"In the throes of death": that is, its signs were upon him. "Ghamarat al-mawt (the agonies of death)": the severities of death. "Sakarat al-mawt (the throes of death)": its severities that cause loss of consciousness.

أنّ مفارقة الروح الجسد لا تخلو من شدة، فيستحب الدعاء لتهوين ذلك. أنّ الأنبياء يألمون بالمرض ويشعرون بشدّته عليهم، وكان النّبيّ صلّى اللّهُ عليه وسلّم يوعك كما يوعك الرجلان، والمرض الَّذِي أصابه صلّى اللّهُ عليه وسلّم حمى شديدة، كان يلطف حرها بمسح وجهه بالماء البارد.
The separation of the soul from the body is not free of severity, so it is recommended to supplicate for the easing of it. The prophets feel pain from illness and sense its severity upon them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would suffer fever as two men would suffer it, and the illness that afflicted him (peace and blessings be upon him) was a severe fever, whose heat he would soothe by wiping his face with cold water.
