On the authority of Ibn Masud (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: I came in upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) while he was suffering from fever, so I touched him and said: "You are indeed suffering a severe fever." He said: "Yes, I suffer fever as much as two men among you would suffer." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

It shows the permissibility of speaking about one's pain, provided it is not out of discontent and anxious complaint. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), though he was the best of those who walked upon the earth, was afflicted by fever pain equal to what would befall two men. The prophets are afflicted by pain, and the wisdom in that is an increase in their ranks with their Lord the Exalted. Severe illness does not mean that Allah does not love the servant; rather it is a trial by which sins are expiated or ranks are raised.
