عَنْ أَبي سعيدٍ الخُدْرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قالَ: قالَ رسُولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ: «لَقِّنُوا موْتَاكُمْ: لا إلٰه إِلّا اللّهُ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
On the authority of Abu Said al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Prompt your dying ones to say: There is no god but Allah." Reported by Muslim.
الشرح · explanation
لقّنوا: التلقين كالتفهيم، أي ذكٌروه بدون إلحاح. موتاكم: المراد بالميت هنا المحتضر لا من فارق الحياة.
"Prompt (laqqinu)": prompting is akin to gentle instruction, that is, remind them without insistence. "Your dying ones (mawtakum)": what is meant by "the dead" here is the one who is dying, not the one who has already departed life.

استحباب تلقين المحتضر لا إلٰه إلّا اللّهُ حتى يختم له بها فيفوز بهذه البشارة العظيمة.
The recommendation to prompt the dying person with "There is no god but Allah" so that he ends his life with it and attains this great glad tiding.
