عنْ أُمِّ سلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهَا قالتْ: قالَ رسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ: «إِذا حَضرْتُمُ المرِيضَ، أَوِ المَيِّتَ، فَقُولُوا خيْرًا، فَإِنَّ الملائِكَةَ يُؤمِّنُونَ عَلى ما تقُولُونَ»، قالتْ: فلمَّا مَاتَ أَبُو سَلَمَةَ، أَتَيْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ فَقُلْتُ: يا رسُولَ اللّهِ، إِنَّ أبا سلَمَةَ قَدْ مَاتَ، قالَ: «قُولي: اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لي وَلَهُ، وَأَعْقِبْني مِنْهُ عُقْبى حَسَنَةً» فقلْتُ: فأَعْقَبَنِي اللّهُ منْ هُوَ خَيْرٌ لي مِنْهُ: مُحمَّدًا صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ. رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ هكذا: «إِذا حَضَرْتُمُ المَرِيضَ أَوِ الْمَيِّتَ» على الشَّكِّ، وَرَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ وغيرهُ. «الميِّتَ» بلا شَكٍّ.
On the authority of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When you attend the sick or the dying, say good, for the angels say 'amin' to what you say." She said: When Abu Salamah died, I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Salamah has died." He said: "Say: O Allah, forgive me and him, and grant me a good successor after him." So Allah gave me in his stead one who was better for me than him: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Muslim reported it thus: "When you attend the sick or the dying" — with the doubt [in wording] — and Abu Dawud and others reported it: "the dying" — without doubt.

يؤمّنون على ما تقولون: أي يقولون آمين. أعقبني: أبدلني وعوضني.
"They say amin to what you say (yu'amminun ala ma taqulun)": that is, they say "amin." "Grant me a successor (a'qibni)": replace and compensate me.

استحباب التكلم بخير عند المريض أو الميت والدعاء له ولغيره مع تلقينه الشهادة. يستحب لمن مات له ميت أن يبدأ بنفسه في الدعاء ثم للميت. ينبغي لمن يقول هذا الدعاء أن يكون على ثقة ويقين بموعود اللّه. حصول ثمرة الامتثال بسرعة من غير توانٍ.
The recommendation to speak good in the presence of the sick or the dying, to supplicate for him and others, and to prompt him with the testimony. It is recommended for one whose relative has died to begin with himself in supplication, then supplicate for the deceased. One who makes this supplication should have trust and certainty in what Allah has promised. The fruit of compliance is attained swiftly, without delay.
