عنْ أُمِّ سلَمَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهَا قالتْ: سمعتُ رسولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ يقولُ: «مَا مِنْ عبْدٍ تُصِيبُهُ مُصِيبَةٌ، فيقولُ: إِنَّا للّهِ وَإِنَّا إِليهِ رَاجِعُونَ، اللَّهمَّ ٱؤْجُرْنِي في مُصِيبَتي، وَاخْلُفْ لي خَيْرًا مِنْهَا إِلَّا أَجَرَهُ اللّهُ تعَالى في مُصِيبتِهِ، وَأَخْلَفَ لهُ خَيْرًا مِنْهَا». قالتْ: فَلَمَّا تُوُفِّيَ أَبُو سَلَمَةَ، قلتُ كما أَمَرني رسولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ، فَأَخْلَفَ اللّهُ لي خَيْرًا منْهُ رسولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ. رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
On the authority of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "There is no servant who is struck by a calamity and says: 'To Allah we belong and to Him we return. O Allah, reward me in my calamity and give me a successor better than it,' except that Allah the Exalted rewards him in his calamity and gives him a successor better than it." She said: When Abu Salamah died, I said what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had commanded me, and Allah gave me in his stead one better than him: the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). ٱؤْجُرْنِي: أعطني الأجر. واخلف لي خيرًا منها: عوّضني خيرًا منها. إلّا أجره: أي أثابه
"Reward me (u'jurni)": grant me the reward. "Give me a successor better than it (wa-khluf li khayran minha)": compensate me with something better than it. "Except that He rewards him (illa ajarahu)": that is, He recompensed him.

فضيلة قول إِنَّا للّهِ وَإِنَّا إِليهِ رَاجِعُونَ، عند نزول المصائب. استحباب تدبّر الدعاء، اللّهم ٱؤْجُرْنِي في مصيبتي واخلف لي خيرًا منها، عند قوله مع كمال الصبر والرضا. إثبات الوعد بحسن الخلف على المصيبة إما في الدنيا أو في الآخرة.
The virtue of saying "To Allah we belong and to Him we return" when calamities descend. The recommendation to ponder the supplication "O Allah, reward me in my calamity and give me a successor better than it" as one says it, with perfect patience and contentment. Affirmation of the promise of a good replacement for the calamity, either in this world or in the Hereafter.
