Riyad Al Salihin

On the authority of Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) visited Sad ibn Ubadah, and with him were Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, Sad ibn Abi Waqqas, and Abdullah ibn Masud (may Allah be pleased with them). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wept, and when the people saw the weeping of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), they wept. He said: "Do you not hear? Allah does not punish for the tears of the eye, nor for the grief of the heart, but He punishes for this — or shows mercy," and he pointed to his tongue. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

The calamity of death is an inescapable calamity, and it is a test for us so that we may do righteous deeds and perfect our works to attain our recompense and that Allah be pleased with us. Weeping and the grief a person feels in his heart are permissible, with no blame in them; the blame lies only in a person producing something the Sharia has forbidden, such as lamentation (nadb) — that is, the enumeration of the deceased's virtues — and niyahah — that is, raising the voice while enumerating the deceased's virtues — or excessive raising of the voice in weeping; likewise forbidden are impatience and discontent with the divine decree and destiny. Ordinary weeping with tears of the eye, or with a slight, faint sound, is not called niyahah (wailing), because this may occur from a person at the intensity of calamity.
