Riyad Al Salihin

On the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came in upon his son Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was breathing his last, and the eyes of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began to shed tears. Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf said to him: "Even you, O Messenger of Allah?!" He said: "O Ibn Awf, it is mercy." Then he followed it with another [tear], and said: "The eye sheds tears and the heart grieves, but we say only what pleases our Lord, and indeed we are grieved by your parting, O Ibrahim." Reported by al-Bukhari, and Muslim reported part of it. The hadiths on this topic are many and well-known in the Sahih. And Allah knows best.

"Breathing his last (yajudu bi-nafsihi)": giving up his soul, that is, on the verge of death. Ibrahim's death was in the tenth year of the Hijrah, when he was sixteen months old; Ibrahim was from Mariyah the Copt. "Shedding tears (tadhrifan)": flowing with tears that stream down.

Evidence of the permissibility of a person stating about himself that he is grieved by a calamity, for he said: "The heart indeed grieves, and we are grieved by your parting, O Ibrahim." In it is evidence that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) may have a child die and feel pain over that, and that what befalls human beings befalls him. The permissibility of questioning one whose action apparently contradicts his statement, so that he may make the distinction clear.
