عنْ أَبي هُريرةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ رسولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ قالَ: «منِ اتَّبعَ جَنَازَةَ مُسْلمٍ إيمَانًا واحْتِسَابًا، وَكَانَ مَعَهُ حَتَّى يُصَلَّى عَلَيْهَا وَيُفْرَغَ منْ دَفْنِها، فَإِنَّهُ يَرْجِعُ مِنَ الأَجْرِ بقِيراطَيْنِ، كُلُّ قيرَاطٍ مِثلُ أُحُدٍ، ومَنْ صَلَّى عَلَيهَا، ثُمَّ رَجَعَ قبْلَ أَنْ تُدْفَنَ، فَإِنَّهُ يرْجِعُ بقِيرَاطٍ» رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ.
On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever follows the funeral of a Muslim out of faith and seeking reward, and remains with it until the prayer is offered over it and its burial is completed, will return with two qirats of reward, each qirat like Uhud; and whoever prays over it, then returns before it is buried, will return with one qirat." إيمانًا: تصديقًا بالوعد الوارد فيها من اللّهِ تعالى. احتسابًا: إخلاصًا للّه تعالى وامتثالًا لأمر الدين، وطلبًا للثواب، لا لشيء آخر من أغراض الدنيا.
"Out of faith (imanan)": believing in the promise contained therein from Allah the Exalted. "Seeking reward (ihtisaban)": out of sincerity to Allah the Exalted, compliance with the command of the religion, and seeking the reward, not for any other worldly aim.

الترغيب بتشييع الجنازة من حين خروجها من البيت إلى أن تدفن، فإن ذلك أعظم للأجر وأقرب لتطييب خاطر أهل البيت. فيه فضيلة لمن اتبع الجنائز، وفضيلة أخرى لمن صلَّى عليها. الحث على إخلاص النيّة في الأعمال حتّى يترتّب عليها الثواب.
Encouragement to accompany the funeral from the time it leaves the house until it is buried, for that is greater in reward and closer to comforting the household of the deceased. In it is a virtue for whoever follows the funeral, and another virtue for whoever prays over it. Encouragement to sincerity of intention in deeds so that reward may result from them.
