On the authority of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "There is no Muslim man who dies and forty men who associate nothing with Allah stand over his funeral, except that Allah accepts their intercession for him." Reported by Muslim.

That accepted intercession is exclusive to Muslims, among whom there is none who associates anything with Allah. Their intercession is accepted for his deliverance from the punishment of the grave or the punishment of the Hereafter, or for the lightening of it for him. Intercession includes one who was obedient, or one who mixed [good and bad deeds], or one who committed sins, for these too are interceded for.
