عَنْ مَرْثَدِ بنِ عبدِ اللّهِ اليَزَنِيِّ قالَ: كانَ مالِكُ بنُ هُبَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ إِذا صلَّى عَلى الجنَازَةِ فَتَقَالَّ النَّاسَ عَليْهَا، جزَّأَهُمْ عليها ثَلاثَةَ أَجْزَاءٍ، ثُمَّ قالَ: قالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ: «مَنْ صَلَّى عليْهِ ثَلاثَةُ صُفُوفٍ، فَقَدْ أَوْجَبَ». رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ، والتِّرْمِذِيُّ وقالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ.
Marthad ibn Abdullah al-Yazani reported: Whenever Malik ibn Hubayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) prayed over a funeral and found the people to be few, he would divide them into three groups. Then he would say: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever is prayed over by three rows [of worshippers], it has been guaranteed for him." Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan (good) hadith.

تقالَّ الناس: رآهم قليلين. جزَّأَهُمْ ثلاثة أجزاء: جعلهم ثلاثة صفوف. أوجب: وجبت له الجنّة، بأن يغفر له اللّه.
"He found the people few": he saw them to be few in number. "He divided them into three groups": he arranged them into three rows. "It has been guaranteed": Paradise became due for him, in that Allah forgives him.
