عَنْ أبي هُريْرَةَ رَضِي اللّهُ عَنْهُ قال: سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ يقولُ: «إذ صَلَّيْتُمْ عَلى المَيِّتِ فأَخْلِصُوا لهُ الدُّعاءَ» رواهُ أبو دَاوُودَ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "When you pray over the deceased, make your supplication sincere for him." Reported by Abu Dawud.
الشرح · explanation
أخلصوا له الدعاء: أي خصّوا الميت بالدعاء مع حضور القلب.
"Make your supplication sincere for him": that is, devote the supplication specifically to the deceased with presence of heart.

وجوب الدعاء للميت، والدعاء للميت استغفار له ودعاء بما يحضر الداعي من القول الذي يرجو به الرحمة له والعفو عنه. أن صلاة الجنازة من أجل هذا الميت فينبغي أن يخصَّ بالدعاء.
The obligation of supplicating for the deceased; supplicating for the deceased consists of seeking forgiveness for him and praying with whatever words come to the supplicant by which he hopes for mercy and pardon for him. That the funeral prayer is for the sake of this deceased person, so he should be singled out for the supplication.
