عَنْ عبدِ اللّهِ بنِ أبي أوْفى رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمَا: أَنَّهُ كبَّرَ على جَنَازَةِ ابْنَةٍ لَهُ أَرْبَعَ تَكْبِيراتٍ، فَقَامَ بَعْدَ الرَّابِعَةِ كَقَدْرِ مَا بَيْنَ التَّكْبيرتيْنِ يَسْتَغفِرُ لهَا وَيَدْعُو، ثُمَّ قالَ: «كَانَ رسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم يَصْنَعُ هكذَا». وفي رِوايةٍ: كَبَّرَ أَرْبعًا، فمكثَ سَاعةً حتَّى ظَنَنْتُ أَنَّهُ سيُكَبِّرُ خَمْسًا، ثُمَّ سلَّمَ عنْ يمِينهِ وَعَنْ شِمالِهِ، فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قُلْنا لَهُ: مَا هذا؟ فقال: «إنِّي لا أزِيدُكُمْ عَلى مَا رَأَيْتُ رسُولَ  اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ يَصْنَعُ»، أوْ: «هكذَا صَنعَ رسولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ». رَوَاهُ الْحَاكِمُ  وقالَ: حديثٌ صحيحٌ.

Abdullah ibn Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that he pronounced four takbirs over the funeral of a daughter of his, and after the fourth he stood for about the length of time between two takbirs, seeking forgiveness for her and supplicating. Then he said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do this." In another narration: He pronounced four takbirs, then he paused for a while until I thought he was going to pronounce a fifth. Then he gave the salutation to his right and to his left. When he had finished, we said to him: What is this? He said: "I will not add for you anything beyond what I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do," or: "Thus did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do." Reported by al-Hakim, who said: a sahih (authentic) hadith.
