عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُما قَالَ: قَالَ رسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «لَوْ أَنَّ النَّاسَ يَعْلَمُونَ مِنَ الوَحْدَةِ ما أَعَلمُ ما سَارَ رَاكِبٌ بِلَيْلٍ وحْدَهُ» رَوَاهُ الْبُخَارِيُّ.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If people knew of the dangers of travelling alone what I know, no rider would ever travel by night alone." Reported by al-Bukhari.

الوحدة: الانفراد في السفر. ما أعلم: ما فيها من الأضرار، والتعبير بهذا مبالغة في التحذير من الانفراد في السفر. راكب: مسافر ولو كان ماشيًا، والتعبير براكب لأنه الغالب من حاله. بليل: التقييد بالليل لزيادة الضرر الناشئ من اجتماع الظلمة مع الانفراد، وإلّا فالمراد السفر مطلقًا.
"Travelling alone": being on one's own in travel. "What I know": the harms it contains; this expression is a hyperbole to warn against travelling alone. "Rider": a traveller, even if he is on foot; it is expressed as "rider" because that is the usual condition. "By night": the restriction to night is because of the increased harm arising from the combination of darkness with being alone; otherwise what is meant is travel in general.

That travelling alone has many harms, both religious and worldly, such as being deprived of one who would assist him in his religion and of congregational prayer, the onset of loneliness, exposure to dangers, and the loss of a companion and friend, among other things.
