عَنْ أَبي سعيدٍ وأَبي هُريْرَةَ رضيَ اللّهُ تعَالى عَنْهُمَا قَالا: قَالَ رسولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «إِذا خَرَج ثَلاثَةٌ في سفَرٍ فلْيُؤَمِّرُوا أَحدَهُمْ» حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ، رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ بإسنادٍ حسنٍ.
Abu Sa'id and Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When three set out on a journey, let them appoint one of them as leader." A hasan (good) hadith, reported by Abu Dawud with a hasan chain.

استحباب الرفقة في السفر ثلاثة على الأقل، لأنّه بالثلاثة تتحقق المصلحة وتندفع المفسدة، لأنّ الاثنين ربما أصاب أحدهما شيء فيبقى منفردًا. أنّ المسلمين لا تتم مصلحتهم إلا بالاجتماع لحاجة بعضهم إلى بعض. مشروعية أن يؤمّر الرفقة على أنفسهم أفضلهم وأجودهم رأيًا.
The recommendation of companionship in travel, at least three in number, for with three the benefit is realized and harm is warded off, since if one of two is stricken by something the other is left alone. That the interests of the Muslims are only fulfilled through coming together, because of their need for one another. The legitimacy of the party appointing over themselves the best of them and the soundest in judgment.
