عَنِ ابْنِ عبَّاسٍ رضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُما ، عنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ قالَ: «خَيرُ الصَّحَابةِ أَرْبَعَةٌ، وَخَيْرُ السَّرايا أَرْبَعُ مِئَةٍ، وخَيرُ الجُيُوشِ أَرْبعةُ آلافٍ، ولَنْ يُغْلَبَ اثْنَا عَشَرَ أَلْفًا منْ قِلَّةٍ» رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ والتِّرْمِذِيُّ وقال: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ.
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: "The best of companions are four, the best of detachments are four hundred, the best of armies are four thousand, and twelve thousand will not be overcome on account of small numbers." Reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan (good) hadith.

"On account of small numbers": that is, because of the fewness of their number.

استحباب أن تكون الرفقة أربعة ، وأنها خير رفقة. من الحِكم في ذلك أنهم قد يحتاجون إلى حاجات ومشورة بعضهم، وبذلك يحصل تعاون على الخير. إذا هزم المسلمون وكان عددهم اثني عشر ألفًا فليس بسبب قلة عددهم، وإنّما يكون لأسباب أخرى. تربية النّبيّ صلّى اللّهُ عليه وسلّم لأصحابه على روح الجماعة والتآلف.
The recommendation that the party be four, and that it is the best of companies. Among the wisdoms in this is that they may have needs and require one another's counsel, whereby cooperation upon good is attained. If the Muslims are defeated while numbering twelve thousand, it is not on account of the fewness of their number, but rather for other reasons. The Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) nurturing of his Companions in the spirit of community and mutual affection.
