عَنْ أَبي قَتَادةَ رضيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: كانَ رَسولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ إِذا كانَ في سفَرٍ فَعَرَّسَ بلَيْلٍ اضْطَجَعَ عَلى يَمينِهِ، وَإِذا عَرَّسَ قُبيْلَ الصُّبْحِ نَصَبَ ذِرَاعَهُ ، وَوَضَعَ رَأْسَهُ عَلى كَفِّهِ. رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ. قالَ العُلَماءُ: إِنَّمَا نَصَبَ ذِرَاعَهُ، لِئلَّا يسْتَغْرِقَ في النَّوْمِ، فَتَفُوتَ صلاةُ الصُّبْحِ عنْ وقْتِهَا، أَوْ عَنْ أَوَّلِ وَقْتِهَا.
Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was on a journey and camped during the night, he would lie down on his right side; and when he camped just before dawn, he would set up his forearm and place his head upon his palm. Reported by Muslim. The scholars said: He set up his forearm only so that he would not sink into deep sleep and thereby miss the dawn prayer at its time, or at the beginning of its time.

نصب ذراعه: ينام على يده لئلا يستغرق في النوم. عرّس: نزل للاستراحة والنوم.
"Set up his forearm": he would sleep upon his hand so as not to sink into deep sleep. "Camped": he alighted to rest and sleep.

استحباب النوم على الشق الأيمن. الاحتياط للصلاة إذا احتاج للنوم قبلها. يجوز النوم قبل دخول وقت الصلاة ما دام عازما على ألّا تفوته وأخذ بالأسباب التي توقظه، فإن غلب على ظنّه أنّه لن يقوم فلا يجوز له النوم قُبيل الوقت. أنّ الإنسان يعطي نفسه حظها من الراحة ولا ينسى عبادة ربه. أنّ من نام آخر اللّيل فإنّه لا ينام نومة المطمئن بل نومة المستيقظ لئلا تفوته صلاة الفجر.
The recommendation of sleeping on the right side. Taking precaution for the prayer when one needs to sleep before it. It is permissible to sleep before the time of the prayer enters, as long as one is resolved not to let it pass and has taken the means that will wake him; but if he thinks it most likely that he will not rise, then it is not permissible for him to sleep just before the time. That a person gives himself his share of rest yet does not forget the worship of his Lord. That whoever sleeps at the end of the night does not sleep the sleep of one at ease, but rather the sleep of one alert, lest the dawn prayer pass him by.
