عَنْ أَنسٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: قالَ رسولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ: «عَلَيْكُمْ بِالدُّلْجَةِ، فَإِنَّ الأَرْضَ تُطْوَى بِاللَّيْلِ» رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ بِإِسْنَادٍ حَسَنٍ صَحِيحٍ.
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Take to travelling by night, for the earth is folded up by night." Reported by Abu Dawud with a hasan sahih chain.
الشرح · explanation
الدّلجة: السير في اللّيل. تطوى بالليل: كناية عن سرعة السير، لأنّ الدواب تكون أنشط لبرودة الليل.
"Travelling by night": journeying during the night. "Folded up by night": a metaphor for the swiftness of travel, because the mounts are more vigorous in the coolness of the night.

استحباب السير ليلًا في السفر، وخاصةً آخر الليل إذا كان أعون على النشاط وقطع المسافات. أنّ الأرض تُطْوَى للمسافر إذا سافر في اللّيل، فيقطع في اللّيل ما لا يقطعه في النهار.
The recommendation of travelling by night, especially in the last part of the night, when it is more conducive to vigor and covering distances. That the earth is folded up for the traveller when he journeys by night, so that he covers by night what he would not cover by day.
