Sahl ibn Amr, and it is also said Sahl ibn al-Rabi' ibn Amr al-Ansari, known as Ibn al-Hanzaliyyah, who was among the people of the Pledge of al-Ridwan (may Allah be pleased with him), reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a camel whose back had drawn near to its belly, and he said: "Fear Allah regarding these dumb beasts. Ride them while they are sound and eat them while they are sound." Reported by Abu Dawud with an authentic chain.

"Its back had drawn near to its belly": a metaphor for the severity of its emaciation. "Dumb": that is, they do not speak so as to express their pain. "Sound": that is, when they are fit to be ridden and wholesome to be eaten.
