عَنْ أبي جعْفَرٍ عبْدِ اللّهِ بنِ جعْفَرٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمَا قالَ: أَرْدفَنِي رسولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ ذاتَ يَوْمٍ خَلْفَهُ، وَأسَرَّ إِليَّ حدِيثًا لا أُحَدِّثُ بِهِ أحَدًا مِنَ النَّاسِ، وكانَ أَحبَّ مَا اسْتَتَرَ بِهِ رسولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ هَدَفٌ أَوْ حَائِشُ نَخْلٍ. يَعْني: حَائِطَ نَخْلٍ رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ هكذا مُخْتصَرًا. وزادَ فِيهِ البَرْقانيُّ بإِسنادِ مُسْلِمٍ بَعْدَ قوْلِهِ: حائِشُ نَخْلٍ: فَدَخَلَ حَائطًا لِرَجُلٍ منَ الأَنْصارِ، فإذا فِيهِ جَمَلٌ، فَلَمَّا رَأى رسولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ جرْجرَ وذَرفَتْ عَيْنَاهُ، فأَتَاهُ النَّبيُّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ فَمَسَحَ سَرَاتَهُ -أَيْ: سَنامَهُ- وَذِفْرَاهُ، فَسكَنَ، فقالَ: «مَنْ رَبُّ هذا الجَمَلِ؟ لِمَنْ هَذَا الجَمَلُ؟» فَجاءَ فَتًى مِنَ الأَنصَارِ فقالَ: هٰذا لي يا رسولَ اللّهِ، فقالَ: «أَفَلا تَتَّقِي اللّهَ في هذِهِ البَهيمَةِ الَّتي مَلَّكَكَ اللّهُ إيَّاهَا؟ فإنَّهُ يَشْكُو إِليَّ أَنَّكَ تُجِيعُهُ وَتُدْئِبُهُ». ورَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ كرِوايَةِ البَرْقانيِّ.
Abu Ja'far Abdullah ibn Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted me behind him one day and confided to me a matter that I would not relate to anyone. The most beloved thing behind which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would screen himself was a raised piece of ground or a grove of palm trees, meaning a walled garden of palms. Reported by Muslim in this abridged form. Al-Barqani added to it, with Muslim's chain, after his words "a grove of palm trees": So he entered a walled garden belonging to a man of the Ansar, and behold, in it was a camel. When it saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), it groaned and its eyes overflowed with tears. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to it and wiped its hump and the area behind its ears, and it grew calm. Then he said: "Who is the owner of this camel? Whose is this camel?" A young man of the Ansar came and said: "It is mine, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Do you not fear Allah regarding this beast which Allah has placed in your ownership? For it has complained to me that you starve it and work it to exhaustion." Abu Dawud reported it like the narration of al-Barqani.

أردفني: أركبني خلفه. لا أحدث به: الظاهر أنه ليس من التشريع العام وإلّا لم يجز له إخفاؤه. لحاجته: عند قضائها. هدف: ما ارتفع من الأرض. الحائط: البستان من النخيل. جرجر: ردد صوتًا في حلقه عند الضجر. ذرفت: سال منها الدمع. سراته: سراة كل شيء ظهره وأعلاه. ذِفْرَاهُ: المَوْضِعُ الَّذِي يَعْرَقُ مِنَ البَعِيرِ خلْفَ الأُذُنِ. ربّ الجمل: صاحبه. تُدْئِبُهُ: أَيْ تُتْعِبُهُ.
"Mounted me behind him": he had me ride behind him. "I would not relate it": apparently it was not part of the general legislation, otherwise it would not have been permissible for him to conceal it. "For his need": when relieving himself. "A raised piece of ground": that which is elevated from the earth. "The walled garden": an orchard of palm trees. "Groaned": it made a repeated sound in its throat out of distress. "Overflowed": tears streamed from them. "Its hump": the "sarat" of anything is its back and upper part. "The area behind its ears": the place on the camel that sweats behind the ear. "The owner of the camel": its master. "Work it to exhaustion": that is, you wear it out.

The permissibility of mounting someone behind on a riding beast if it can bear it. Riding beasts are a blessing from Allah (the Mighty and Majestic), so they should be thanked by feeding them and being kind to them. A miracle of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the dumb beast's complaining to him and his understanding of its condition. The recommendation of guiding people to kindness toward the creatures of Allah the Exalted.
