عَنْ جابرٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ، قالَ: كانَ رسولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ يَتَخلَّفُ في المسِيرِ، فَيُزْجِي الضَّعيفَ ، ويُرْدِفُ ويدْعُو لهُ. رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ بإِسنادٍ حسنٍ.
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would lag behind during the march, driving on the weak, taking someone up to ride behind him, and supplicating for him. Reported by Abu Dawud with a hasan chain.
الشرح · explanation
يتخلّف في المسير: يتأخّر ويسير آخر الناس في السفر. يزجي: يسوق ويدفع برفق. يُردف: يُركب خلفه.
"Lag behind during the march": he would fall back and travel at the rear of the people during the journey. "Driving on": urging and gently pushing forward. "Take up to ride behind him": he would seat him behind himself.

استحباب تفقد الأمير للنّاس وتشجيعه الضعيف منهم وإعانته المحتاج، وذلك لكل مسلم. الحثّ على تعهد الراعي لرعيته وتفقده لهم. تواضع النّبيّ صلّى اللّهُ عليه وسلّم واهتمامه بأصحابه ورعايته لهم. الدعاء لمن كان لديه ضعف أو قصر همة رجاء أن يصل لمطلوبه.
The recommendation that the leader look after the people, encourage the weak among them, and aid the needy; and this applies to every Muslim. Encouragement to the shepherd's care for his flock and looking after them. The humility of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), his concern for his Companions, and his care for them. Supplicating for whoever has weakness or falls short in resolve, in hope that he may reach his goal.
