عَنِ ابنِ عمرَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمَا : أَنَّ رسولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ كانَ إِذا اسْتَوَى عَلَى بعِيرهِ خَارجًا إِلى سفَرٍ كَبَّرَ ثلاثًا، ثُمَّ قالَ: «سُبْحَانَ الَّذِي سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَٰذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِينَ وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنقَلِبُونَ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ في سَفَرِنَا هذا البِرَّ والتَّقوى، ومِنَ العَمَلِ ما تَرْضى، اللَّهُمَّ هَوِّنْ علَيْنا سفَرَنَا هذا وَاطْوِ عنَّا بُعْدَهُ، اللَّهُمَّ أَنتَ الصَّاحِبُ في السَّفَرِ، وَالخَلِيفَةُ في الأهْلِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ وعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ، وكآبةِ المنْظَرِ، وَسُوءِ المُنْقلَبِ في المالِ والأهْلِ والولد» وإِذا رجَعَ قَالَهُنَّ وزادَ فيِهنَّ: «آيِبونَ تَائِبونَ عَابِدُونَ لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُونَ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted his camel setting out on a journey, he would say "Allahu Akbar" three times, then say: "Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us, for we could never have accomplished it, and to our Lord we shall surely return. O Allah, we ask You in this journey of ours righteousness and piety, and deeds that please You. O Allah, make this journey of ours easy for us and fold up its distance for us. O Allah, You are the Companion in travel and the Guardian over the family. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the hardship of the journey, from a sorrowful sight, and from an evil return regarding wealth, family, and children." And when he returned, he would say the same and add to them: "Returning, repenting, worshipping, and to our Lord giving praise." Reported by Muslim.

كبّر: قال: الله أكبر. مُقْرِنِينَ: مُطِيقِينَ. البرّ: الخير والفضل. هون علينا سفرنا: خفف عنا مشقته. واطْو عنّا بعده: هيئ لنا أسباب قطعه بزمن قصير. الصاحب: الملازم بالعناية والحفظ. الخليفة: من يخلف غيره وينوب عنه. أعوذ: أعتصم وأستجير. وَعْثاء: أي الشِّدَّة. كآبَة: تَغَيُّرُ النَّفسِ مِنْ حُزْنٍ ونحْوِهِ. المُنْقَلَب: المرْجِعُ. آيبون: راجعون.
"Said Allahu Akbar": he said, "Allah is the Greatest." "Could never have accomplished it": able to master it. "Righteousness": goodness and virtue. "Make this journey of ours easy for us": lighten its hardship for us. "Fold up its distance for us": prepare for us the means to cover it in a short time. "The Companion": the One who stays close with care and protection. "The Guardian": the one who succeeds another and stands in his place. "I seek refuge": I take shelter and seek protection. "Hardship": that is, severity. "Sorrowful sight": a change of the soul from grief and the like. "Return": the place of return. "Returning": coming back.

استحباب الدعاء المذكور عند الذهاب والإياب من السفر، لأن السفر مظنة التقصير وحصول ما يستعاذ منه. الإقبال على اللّهِ عزّ وجلّ و رجاؤه منه التسهيل والخير والتوفيق، وشكره على ما وفقه إليه من نعم. شكر اللّهِ وتمجيده عند استعمال نعمه سبحانه. استحباب الدعاء عند ركوب أيّ دابّة، فيشمل كلّ مركوب في أيّ زمن.
The recommendation of the mentioned supplication when setting out and returning from travel, since travel is a place of shortcomings and of the befalling of that from which refuge is sought. Turning to Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) and hoping from Him for ease, good, and success, and thanking Him for the blessings by which He has granted success. Thanking Allah and glorifying Him when making use of His blessings, Glorified is He. The recommendation of supplicating when mounting any riding beast, which includes every mount in any age.
