عنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمِ قَالَ: «السَّفَرُ قِطْعَةٌ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ، يَمْنَعُ أَحَدَكُمْ طَعامَهُ وشَرَابَهُ وَنَوْمَهُ، فَإذَا قَضَى أَحَدُكُمْ نَهْمَتَهُ مِنْ سَفَرِهِ فَلْيُعَجِّلْ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Travel is a portion of torment: it deprives one of you of his food, his drink, and his sleep. So when one of you has fulfilled his need from his journey, let him hasten back to his family." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
قطعة من العذاب: لما فيه من المشقة مع فراق الأحباب. يمنع أحدكم: أي يمنع السفر كمال اللذة فيما ذكر. نهمته: حاجته ومقصوده من السفر.
"A portion of torment": because of the hardship it entails along with separation from loved ones. "It deprives one of you": that is, travel prevents the full enjoyment of what was mentioned. "His need (nahmatahu)": his need and objective from the journey.

الحثّ على الرجوع إلى الأهل بعد انتهاء الغرض من السفر ولا يتأخر عنهم. لا ينبغي لأحد أن يتغرب ويبتعد عن أهله لغير حاجة لاسيما من يخشى عليهم الضياع في الغيبة.
Encouragement to return to one's family after the purpose of the journey is complete, and not to delay away from them. It is not fitting for anyone to stay abroad and remain far from his family without need, especially one who fears his family may be lost in his absence.
