Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When one of you has been away for a long time, let him not come to his family by night." In another narration: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade a man to come to his family by night. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

It is recommended for one returning from travel to inform his family before his arrival, and he should not take them by surprise at night without their knowledge. It is said that among the wisdoms in this is that a man might come to his family in this manner unexpectedly and find something troubling enter his heart, or it might occur to his wife's heart that he holds a bad opinion of her.
