عَنْ كَعْبِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ : أَنّ رسُولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ كانَ إِذَا قَدِمَ مِنْ سَفَرٍ بَدَأَ بالْمَسْجِدِ فَركَعَ فِيهِ رَكْعتَيْنِ. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Ka'b ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when he arrived from a journey, would begin with the mosque and pray two rak'ahs in it. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

استحباب صلاة القادم من سفر ركعتين في أقرب مسجد لبيته قبل الذهاب إليه. قيل من الحِكم في ذلك افتتاح مقامه في بلده بعبادة اللّهِ تعالى. فيه شكر اللّه على العودة من السفر سالمًا.
The recommendation for one arriving from a journey to pray two rak'ahs in the nearest mosque to his home before going to it. It is said that among the wisdoms in this is beginning one's stay in his town with the worship of Allah the Exalted. In it is gratitude to Allah for returning from the journey safely.
