عَنْ أَبي مُوسى الأشْعرِيِّ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قال: قال رسولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم: «مثَلُ الْمُؤْمِنِ الَّذِي يقْرَأُ القرآنَ مثلُ الأُتْرُجَّةِ: ريحُهَا طَيِّبٌ وطَعمُهَا طَيِّبٌ، ومثَلُ الْمُؤْمِنِ الَّذي لا يَقْرَأُ القُرْآنَ كَمثَلِ التَّمْرَةِ: لا رِيحَ لهَا وطعْمُهَا حُلْوٌ، ومثَلُ المُنَافِقِ الَّذِي يَقْرَأُ القرْآنَ كَمثَلِ الرِّيْحَانَةِ: رِيحُها طَيّبٌ وطَعْمُهَا مرُّ، ومَثَلُ المُنَافِقِ الَّذِي لا يَقْرَأُ القرآنَ كَمَثلِ الحَنْظَلَةِ: لَيْسَ لَها رِيحٌ وَطَعمُهَا مُرٌّ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The parable of the believer who recites the Qur'an is like the citron (utrujjah): its fragrance is pleasant and its taste is pleasant. The parable of the believer who does not recite the Qur'an is like the date: it has no fragrance, but its taste is sweet. The parable of the hypocrite who recites the Qur'an is like basil (rayhanah): its fragrance is pleasant but its taste is bitter. And the parable of the hypocrite who does not recite the Qur'an is like the colocynth (hanzalah): it has no fragrance and its taste is bitter." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

الأترجة: ضرب من الثمار منظرها جميل وريحها طيب، كالبرتقال والتفاح والشمام. الريحانة: كل بقلة طيبة الريح، كالورد والريحان والياسمين. الحنظلة: نوع من النبات، ثمره يضرب المثل بمرارته.
"The citron (utrujjah)": a kind of fruit beautiful in appearance and pleasant in fragrance, like the orange, apple, and melon. "The basil (rayhanah)": every fragrant herb, like the rose, sweet basil, and jasmine. "The colocynth (hanzalah)": a type of plant whose fruit is proverbial for its bitterness.

أنّ حامل القرآن العامل به في درجة عالية، وذِكره حسن عند اللّهِ والناس. المؤمن الَّذِي لا يقرأ القرآن طيب عند اللّهِ والناس. المنافق الذي يقرأ القرآن حسن الظاهر خبيث الباطن. المنافق الذي لا يقرأ القرآن خبيث الظاهر والباطن.
The bearer of the Qur'an who acts upon it holds a lofty rank, and his mention is good before Allah and people. The believer who does not recite the Qur'an is [still] good before Allah and people. The hypocrite who recites the Qur'an has a good outward appearance but a wicked inner self. The hypocrite who does not recite the Qur'an is wicked both outwardly and inwardly.
