عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمَا قال: كَانَ رَجلٌ يَقْرَأُ سُورةَ الكَهْفِ، وَعِنْدَهُ فَرَسٌ مَرْبُوط بِشَطَنَيْنِ، فَتَغَشَّتْهُ سَحَابَةٌ فَجَعَلَتْ تَدْنُو، وجعلَ فَرَسُهُ ينْفِرُ مِنْها، فَلَمَّا أَصْبحَ أَتَى النَّبِيَّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم، فَذَكَرَ ذٰلِكَ لهُ، فقال: «تِلكَ السَّكِينَةُ تَنَزَّلتْ لِلْقُرآنِ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Al-Bara (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: A man was reciting Surah al-Kahf, and beside him was a horse tied with two ropes. A cloud overshadowed him and began to draw near, and his horse began to shy away from it. When morning came, he went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned that to him, and he said: "That was the tranquility (sakinah) that descended for the Qur'an." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
بشطَنين: الشّطن هو الْحَبْل. فتغشّته سحابة: أي علَته وظلَّلته سحابة. السّكينة: شيء من مخلوقات اللّهِ تعالى فيها طمأنينة ورحمة ومعها الملائكة.
"With two ropes (bi-shatanayn)": the shatan is the rope. "A cloud overshadowed him": that is, a cloud rose over him and shaded him. "The tranquility (sakinah)": something among the creations of Allah the Exalted containing serenity and mercy, accompanied by the angels.
