عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمَا: أَنَّ رسولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قال: «إِنَّمَا مَثَلُ صاحِبِ الْقُرْآنِ كَمَثَلِ الإِبِلِ المُعَقَّلَةِ، إِنْ عَاهَد عَليْها أَمْسَكَهَا، وإِنْ أَطْلَقَهَا ذَهَبَتْ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The parable of the companion of the Qur'an is only like the parable of hobbled camels: if he tends to them, he retains them, and if he lets them loose, they go away." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

الإبل المعقّلة: الممسوكة بالعقال أي المشدودة بالحبال. أمسكها: أي استمر إمساكه لها.
"The hobbled camels (al-mu'aqqalah)": those held by the tether, that is, bound with ropes. "He retains them": that is, his holding on to them continues.

تشبيه صاحب القرآن بصاحب الإبل إن عقلها وحافظ عليها أمن تفلتها، وإن تركها ضاعت وتعسر تحصيلها، ووجه الشبه سرعة التفلت والضياع كالإبل.
The likening of the companion of the Qur'an to the owner of camels: if he hobbles them and tends to them he is secure against their slipping away, and if he leaves them they are lost and become difficult to recover; the point of resemblance is the swiftness of slipping away and loss, as with camels.
