Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No people gather in one of the houses of Allah, reciting the Book of Allah and studying it together among themselves, but that tranquility descends upon them, mercy envelops them, the angels surround them, and Allah mentions them among those who are with Him." Reported by Muslim.

"No people gather": this is a portion of a hadith that was mentioned in full earlier, in the chapter on fulfilling the needs of Muslims. "studying it together (yatadarasunahu)": that is, they attend to it by reciting and memorizing it lest they forget it; its meaning is that the second recites what the first recited. "al-sakinah (tranquility)": serenity, the state by which the heart is set at ease. "mercy envelops them": it encompasses them. "the angels surround them": they encircle them. "among those who are with Him": that is, among the angels.

The recommendation of gathering in the houses of Allah to recite the Qur'an and study it together, because that is a cause for the descent of serenity, the coming down of mercy, the presence of the angels, Allah's pleasure with those who gather, and their being mentioned in heaven for their blessed deed. The tremendous merit of striving in the pursuit of knowledge.
