Riyad Al Salihin

Uthman ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) perform ablution like this ablution of mine, then he said: "Whoever performs ablution like this, his previous sins are forgiven, and his prayer and his walking to the mosque become supererogatory (an added reward)." Reported by Muslim.

"his previous sins are forgiven": what is meant are the minor sins, not the major ones. "nafilah (supererogatory)": that which is an additional reward for him beyond the basic (obligation).

That ablution is a cause for the forgiveness of sins not connected with the rights of people, and for gaining abundant good deeds through walking to the mosque and praying in it. Whoever has neither minor nor major sins has his good deeds increased.
