عَنْ أبي هُرَيْرَةَ رضي اللّهُ عنه: أَنَّ رسُولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قالَ: «أَلا أَدُلُّكُمْ على ما يَمْحُو اللّهُ بِهِ الخَطَايَا، ويرْفَعُ بِهِ الدَّرجَاتِ؟» قَالُوا: بلى يا رَسُولَ اللّهِ، قَالَ: «إِسْباغُ الوُضُوءِ على المكَارِهِ، وكَثْرَةُ الخُطَا إلى المسَاجِدِ، وانْتِظَارُ الصَّلاةِ بعْدَ الصَّلاةِ، فَذلِكُمُ الرِّبَاطُ، فَذلِكُمُ الرِّبَاطُ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not direct you to that by which Allah erases sins and raises ranks?" They said: "Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah." He said: "Performing ablution thoroughly despite hardships, taking many steps to the mosques, and awaiting the (next) prayer after the (previous) prayer—that is the ribat, that is the ribat." يمحو: يغفر. الدرجات: المنازل في الجنّة. إسباغ الوضوء: إعطاء كل عضوٍ حقه من الطهارة، والإتيان بالوضوء كاملًا تامًّا. على المكاره: كشدة البرد وغيره. فذلكم الرباط: أصل الرباط الحبس على الشيء، كأنّه حبس نفسه على هذه الطاعة، والتكرار في هذه العبارة للاهتمام وتعظيم الشأن والتفهيم.
"erases (yamhu)": forgives. "al-darajat (the ranks)": the stations in Paradise. "performing ablution thoroughly (isbagh al-wudu)": giving each limb its due of purification, and performing ablution completely and perfectly. "despite hardships (ʿala al-makarih)": such as severe cold and the like. "that is the ribat": the original meaning of ribat is binding oneself upon something, as though one has confined himself to this act of obedience; the repetition in this expression is for emphasis, to magnify its importance and drive the point home.

أنّ الوضوء يمحو الذنوب الصغائر، وكذلك المشي إلى المساجد، وانتظار الصلاة. الحثّ على إسباغ الوضوء وتحسينه ولو كان في البرد الشديد. أهمية المحافظة على صلاة الجماعة في المسجد. بيان فضل كثرة الخُطا إلى المساجد ولو بَعُد بيته. العبادات المذكورة في الحديث وسيلة للمغفرة والتقرب إلى الله عز وجل. ما ورد في الأحاديث من تكفير الذنوب إنما هو في شأن ما يتعلق بحقوق الله تعالى، وأما ما يتعلق بحقوق العباد فلا بد من أدائها لأصحابها، أو التحلل والاستبراء منها.
That ablution erases minor sins, and likewise walking to the mosques and awaiting the prayer. Encouragement to perform ablution thoroughly and well, even in severe cold. The importance of maintaining congregational prayer in the mosque. Clarifying the merit of taking many steps to the mosques, even if one's house is far. The acts of worship mentioned in the hadith are a means to forgiveness and to drawing near to Allah (the Mighty and Majestic). What is mentioned in the hadiths concerning the expiation of sins pertains only to matters connected with the rights of Allah the Exalted; as for what is connected with the rights of people, they must be discharged to those entitled to them, or one must seek their pardon and be absolved of them.
