عَنْ أَبي هُريْرةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عنْهُ: أَنَّ رسُولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قَال: «لَوْ يعْلَمُ النَّاسُ ما في النِّدَاءِ والصَّفِّ الأَوَّلِ، ثُمَّ لَمْ يَجِدُوا إِلّا أَنْ يسْتَهِمُوا عَلَيْهِ لاسْتَهَمُوا علَيْهِ، ولوْ يعْلَمُونَ ما في التَّهْجِيرِ لاسْتبَقُوا إِلَيْهِ، ولَوْ يعْلَمُونَ ما في العَتَمَةِ والصُّبْحِ لأَتَوْهُمَا وَلَوْ حَبْوًا» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If people knew what (reward) there is in the call to prayer (adhan) and the first row, and then found no way (to attain it) except by drawing lots for it, they would draw lots. If they knew what there is in coming early to the prayer, they would race to it. And if they knew what there is in the ʿisha and the fajr prayers, they would come to them even if crawling." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

النداء: الأذان. الصف الأول: في الصلاة، وهو الَّذِي يلي الإمام. لاسْتهَموا: لاقْترَعُوا. التَّهْجِير: التَّبْكِير إِلى الصَّلاةِ. لاستبقوا: لسبق بعضهم بعضًا في الحضور إلى الصلاة. العتمة: صلاة العشاء. حبوًا: مشيًا على اليدين كما يفعل الطفل، أو على الركبتين.
"al-nida (the call)": the adhan. "the first row": in prayer, which is the one nearest the imam. "they would draw lots (la-stahamu)": they would cast lots. "al-tahjir": coming early to the prayer. "they would race (la-stabaqu)": they would outstrip one another in attending the prayer. "al-ʿatamah": the ʿisha (night) prayer. "crawling (habwan)": walking on the hands as an infant does, or on the knees.

الترغيب في الأذان، لأنه من شعائر الإسلام، وثواب المؤذن عظيم جدًا عند الله تعالى. الترغيب في الصفوف الأولى للصلاة، لأنّ أصحابها يبادرون في أول الوقت، ولأنّ ملائكة الرحمة تدعو للإمام ثم لمن في الصف الأول أولًا، ثم لمن في الصف الثاني وهكذا. فضل صلاة الجماعة وفضل التبكير إليها. الحثّ على حضور صلاتيّ العشاء والصبح جماعة في المسجد، لأنّهما أدل الصلوات على الصدق مع اللّهِ، وهما أثقل الصلوات على المنافقين وأهل الضلالة.
Encouragement toward the adhan, because it is among the symbols of Islam, and the reward of the muezzin is tremendous with Allah the Exalted. Encouragement toward the first rows in prayer, because those in them hasten at the beginning of the time, and because the angels of mercy invoke blessings upon the imam, then upon those in the first row first, then upon those in the second row, and so on. The merit of congregational prayer and the merit of coming early to it. Encouragement to attend the ʿisha and fajr prayers in congregation in the mosque, because they are the prayers that most indicate truthfulness with Allah, and they are the heaviest of prayers upon the hypocrites and the people of misguidance.
