عَنْ مُعَاوِيَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: سَمِعْتُ رسُولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «المُؤَذِّنُونَ أَطْوَلُ النَّاسِ أعْنَاقًا يَوْمَ القِيَامةِ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The muezzins will have the longest necks of all people on the Day of Resurrection." Reported by Muslim.
الشرح · explanation
أعناقًا: جمع عنق، والمراد أنّهم أكثر الناس تطلعًا إلى رحمة اللّهِ، وقيل: تطول أعناقهم حتى لا ينالهم العرق، وقيل: إنّ طول أعناقهم يدل على مكانتهم وشرفهم في ذلك اليوم.
"longest necks": aʿnaq is the plural of ʿunuq (neck); the meaning is that they will be the people most eager and longing for Allah's mercy. It is also said that their necks will be extended so that the sweat does not reach them; and it is said that the length of their necks indicates their standing and honor on that Day.
