عَنْ أَبي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قالَ: «مَنْ تَطَهَّرَ في بَيْتِهِ، ثُمَّ مَضى إِلى بيْتٍ مِنْ بُيُوتِ اللّهِ، لِيَقْضِيَ فَرِيضَةً مِنْ فَرائِضِ اللّهِ كانَتْ خُطُواتُهُ، إِحْدَاهُمَا تَحُطُّ خَطِيئَةً، والأُخْرى تَرْفَعُ دَرَجَةً» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever purifies himself in his house, then proceeds to one of the houses of Allah in order to fulfill one of the obligations ordained by Allah, then of his two steps, one wipes away a sin and the other raises him a degree." تطهَّر: توضأ للصلاة أو اغتسل. ليقضي: ليؤدي. تحط: تزيل وتمحو.
"Purifies himself": performs wudu for the prayer or performs ghusl. "To fulfill": to perform. "Wipes away": removes and erases.

أنّ قصد المسجد لأداء الصلاة فيه يكفر بكل خطوة خطيئة ويرفع بكل خطوة درجة في الجنّة عند اللّه، واللّه واسع الفضل كريم العطاء. السنّة أن يتوضأ المسلم في بيته، ويذهب إلى المسجد متوضئًا، والظاهر أن هذا يشمل خروجه من أي موضع هو فيه قاصدًا المسجد، كالمكتب ونحوه.
Heading to the mosque to perform the prayer expiates a sin with every step and raises a degree in Paradise with every step in the sight of Allah; and Allah is vast in bounty, generous in giving. It is the Sunnah for the Muslim to perform wudu in his house and go to the mosque already in a state of purity; and apparently this includes his going out from any place he is in while intending the mosque, such as the office and the like.
