عَنْ جَابِرٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قالَ: خَلَتِ البِقَاعُ حَوْلَ المسْجِدِ، فَأَرادَ بَنُو سَلِمَةَ أَنْ يَنْتَقِلُوا قُرْبَ المَسْجِدِ، فَبَلَغَ ذلِكَ النَّبِيَّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم فقالَ لَهُمْ: «بَلَغَني أَنَّكُمْ تُرِيدُونَ أَنْ تَنْتَقِلُوا قُرْبَ المَسْجِدِ؟» قَالُوا: نَعَمْ يَا رَسُولَ اللّهِ، قَدْ أَرَدْنَا ذَلِكَ، فقالَ: «بَنِي سَلِمَةَ، دِيَارَكُمْ تُكْتَبْ آثارُكُمْ، دِيَارَكُمْ تُكْتَبْ آثَارُكُمْ» فَقَالُوا: ما يَسُرُّنَا أَنَّا كُنَّا تَحَوَّلْنَا. رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ، وَرَوَى الْبُخَارِيُّ معناهُ مِنْ رِوايَةِ أنَسٍ.
Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The plots around the mosque became vacant, so Banu Salimah wished to move nearer the mosque. That reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said to them: "It has reached me that you wish to move nearer the mosque?" They said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah, we had intended that. He said: "O Banu Salimah, keep to your homes; your footprints will be recorded. Keep to your homes; your footprints will be recorded." So they said: It would not have pleased us to have moved. Reported by Muslim; and al-Bukhari reported its meaning through the narration of Anas.

خلت: فرغت. البقاع: جمع بقعة، وهي القطعة من الأرض. دياركم: أي الزموا دياركم، ولا تنتقلوا عنها إلى غيرها. آثاركم: خطاكم الكثيرة إلى المسجد.
"Became vacant": emptied. "The plots (al-biqa')": plural of buqa, a piece of land. "Your homes": that is, keep to your homes and do not move away from them to others. "Your footprints": your many steps to the mosque.

زيادة فضل المشي من بُعد إلى المسجد، وأنّه لا يستحب تقريب المسكن إلى المسجد إذا كان يلزم منه خلو أطراف البلد من أهلها. أنّ الأرض تسجل ما يقع من عمل وتكتبه. أنّ أصحاب النّبيّ صلّى اللّهُ عليه وسلّم كانت الصلاة هي همهم الأول، فيمكن للواحد منهم رضي اللّهُ عنهم أن يفارق أرضه التي نشأ فيها من أجل أن يكون قريبًا من المسجد.
The added merit of walking from afar to the mosque, and that it is not recommended to bring one's dwelling near the mosque if that entails the outskirts of the town being emptied of their people. That the earth records what is done upon it and writes it down. That the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) held the prayer as their foremost concern, such that one of them (may Allah be pleased with them) would leave the land in which he grew up in order to be near the mosque.
