عَنْ أبي هُرَيْرَة رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ: أَنَّ رسُولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّم قالَ: «أَلا أَدُلُّكُمْ عَلى مَا يمْحُو اللّهُ بِهِ الخَطَايَا، وَيَرْفَعُ بِهِ الدَّرَجَاتِ؟» قَالُوا: بَلى يا رسُولَ اللّهِ، قَالَ: «إِسْبَاغُ الْوُضُوءِ عَلى المَكَارِهِ، وَكَثْرَةُ الخُطَا إِلى المَسَاجِدِ، وَانْتِظَارُ الصَّلاةِ بعْدَ الصَّلاةِ، فَذٰلِكُمُ الرِّبَاطُ، فَذٰلِكُمُ الرِّبَاطُ» رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not direct you to that by which Allah wipes away sins and raises degrees?" They said: Yes indeed, O Messenger of Allah. He said: "Performing wudu thoroughly despite hardships, taking many steps to the mosques, and awaiting the prayer after the prayer—that is the ribat, that is the ribat." Reported by Muslim.

إسباغ الوضوء: استيعاب الأعضاء بالغسل. على المكاره: على المشقات. الرباط: ملازمة حدود البلاد لدفع العدو عنها، وهذا من باب التشبيه.
"Performing wudu thoroughly (isbagh al-wudu)": washing the limbs completely. "Despite hardships": despite difficulties. "The ribat": remaining stationed at the frontiers of the land to repel the enemy from them; this is used here by way of comparison.

The merit of a dwelling far from the mosques, on account of the many steps to the prayer that it entails. An explanation of the reward of one who compels himself to do what he dislikes, such as performing wudu in the cold. That awaiting the prayer is like the true ribat, because it is a striving against the self, and prayer is the most excellent of acts of worship.
