Riyad Al Salihin

Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: A blind man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have no guide to lead me to the mosque. So he asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to grant him a concession to pray in his house, and he granted him the concession. But when he turned to leave, he called him back and said to him: "Do you hear the call to prayer?" He said: Yes. He said: "Then respond." Reported by Muslim.

"A blind man": he was Ibn Umm Maktum, whose name was Abdullah, and it is said Amr, as in the following hadith. "Grant a concession (yurakhkhis)": to lighten and permit for him; a concession (rukhsah) is the changing of a ruling from difficulty to ease on account of an excuse. "The call (al-nida)": the adhan. "Then respond": that is, there is no concession.

The emphasis on the congregation for one who hears the call, and the bearing of the slight fatigue involved in attaining it. That there is no excuse for abandoning prayer in congregation except for a valid, religiously recognized excuse.
