عَنْ بُرَيْدَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ قالَ: «العَهْدُ الَّذِي بيْنَنَا وبَيْنَهُمُ الصَّلاةُ، فَمَنْ تَرَكَهَا فَقَدْ كَفَرَ» رَوَاهُ التِّرْمِذِيُّ وقالَ: حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ.
Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The covenant between us and them is prayer; whoever abandons it has committed disbelief." Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan sahih hadith.

العهد الذي بيننا وبينهم: الضمير للمنافقين، وقيل لمن تركها جاحدًا منكرًا لوجوبها.
"The covenant between us and them": the pronoun refers to the hypocrites; it is also said to refer to whoever abandons it while denying and rejecting its obligation.

Abandoning prayer is disbelief and apostasy. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) made prayer the dividing line between disbelief and faith, and between the believers and the disbelievers.
