Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The first of his deeds for which a servant will be brought to account on the Day of Resurrection is his prayer. If it is sound, he has succeeded and prospered; but if it is corrupt, he has failed and lost. If anything is lacking from his obligatory prayers, the Lord (the Mighty and Majestic) will say: 'Look, does My servant have any voluntary prayers?' so that whatever was lacking in the obligatory prayers may be completed by them. Then the rest of his deeds will be dealt with in the same way." Reported by al-Tirmidhi, who said: a hasan (good) hadith.

"The first thing for which he is called to account": that is, among the rights of Allah, the Exalted. "He has succeeded and prospered": he has won and attained. "It is corrupt": that is, because of the presence of something that invalidates it, such as a missing pillar or condition. "He has failed and lost": he has perished and not attained what he sought. "Voluntary": that is, a supererogatory (nafl) prayer. "Then the rest of his deeds will be like this": such as fasting and pilgrimage—that is, their voluntary acts complete their obligatory ones.

Urging the performance and perfection of the obligatory acts—the greatest of which is prayer—giving care to what makes them valid and avoiding what invalidates them, and encouraging an abundance of voluntary acts so that they may make up for the deficiencies in the obligatory acts, which scarcely anyone is free of except a rare few.
