عنْ أَنسٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ قالَ: أُقِيمَتِ الصَّلاةُ، فَأَقْبَلَ عَليْنَا رَسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ بِوَجْهِهِ فقَالَ: «أَقِيمُوا صُفُوفَكُمْ وتَرَاصُّوا، فَإنِّي أَرَاكُمْ مِنْ وَرَاءِ ظَهْرِي» رَواَهُ البُخَارِيُّ بِلَفْظِهِ، ومُسْلِمٌ بمَعْنَاهُ. وفي رِوَايَةٍ لِلْبُخَارِيِّ: «وكَانَ أَحَدُنَا يُلْزِقُ مَنْكِبَهُ بِمَنْكِبِ صَاحِبِهِ، وقَدَمَهُ بِقَدَمِهِ».
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The iqamah for prayer was pronounced, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face toward us and said: "Straighten your rows and stand close together, for indeed I see you from behind my back." Reported by al-Bukhari in these words, and by Muslim in meaning. In another narration by al-Bukhari: "And each one of us would press his shoulder against his companion's shoulder and his foot against his foot."
الشرح · explanation
أقيموا صفوفكم: سووها مستقيمة على سمت واحد. تراصوا: تلاصقوا بالمناكب حتى لا تكون فرجة. فإني أراكم من وراء ظهري: أي أعلمكم بإعلام الوحي إياي، أو أراكم حقيقة، يعني فيكون ذلك معجزة له. يلزق منكبيه: أي رأس منكبه.
"Straighten your rows": align them straight along a single line. "Stand close together": press together at the shoulders so that there is no gap. "For I see you from behind my back": that is, I know of you through the revelation informing me, or I see you in reality, which would be a miracle granted to him. "He presses his shoulder": that is, the top of his shoulder.

استحباب التفات الإمام إلى صفوف المصلين وأمرهم بتسويتها وتراصها، وأن يباشر بنفسه إن احتيج إلى ذلك. تكرمة رسول اللّهِ صلّى اللّهُ عليه وسلّم حيث كان يخبر بما عليه الناس، أو يراهم بما أكرمه اللّه من المعجزات.
The recommendation that the imam turn toward the rows of the worshippers and command them to straighten and close up their rows, and that he undertake it himself if needed. The honoring of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), in that he would inform them of the people's state, or see them by means of the miracles with which Allah honored him.
