عَنِ النُّعْمَانِ بنِ بَشِيرٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُما قالَ: سَمِعْتُ رسُولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ يَقُولُ: «لَتُسَوُّنَّ صُفُوفَكُمْ، أَوْ ليُخَالِفَنَّ اللّهُ بَيْنَ وُجُوهِكُمْ» مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ. وَفي رِوَايةٍ لِمُسْلِمٍ: أَنَّ رسُولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ كانَ يُسَوِّي صُفُوفَنَا، حتَّى كأَنَّمَا يُسَوِّي بِهَا القِدَاحَ، حَتَّى رَأَى أنَّا قَدْ عَقَلْنَا عَنْهُ، ثُمَّ خَرَجَ يَوْمًا فَقَامَ حَتَّى كَادَ يُكَبِّرُ، فَرَأَى رجُلًا بَادِيًا صَدْرُهُ مِنَ الصَّفِّ فَقَالَ: «عِبَادَ اللّهِ لَتُسَوُّنَّ صُفُوفَكُمْ، أَوْ لَيُخَالِفَنَّ اللّهُ بَيْنَ وُجُوهِكُمْ».
Al-Nu'man ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "You shall straighten your rows, or Allah will surely cause discord between your faces." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim). In another narration by Muslim: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to straighten our rows until it was as though he were straightening arrow-shafts with them, until he saw that we had understood it from him. Then one day he came out and stood, and was about to say the takbir, when he saw a man whose chest was protruding from the row, so he said: "O servants of Allah, you shall straighten your rows, or Allah will surely cause discord between your faces."
الشرح · explanation
أو ليخالفن اللّهُ بين وجوهكم: أي يوقع الخلاف بينها عقوبة على تهاونهم في إقامة صفوفهم وإحسان صلاتهم. القداح: جمع القدح، وهو السهم قبل أن يركب فيه نصله. عقلنا: فهمنا وامتثلنا. باديًا: ظاهرًا غير مستوٍ مع الصف.
"Or Allah will surely cause discord between your faces": that is, He will cast discord among them as a punishment for their negligence in straightening their rows and perfecting their prayer. "The arrow-shafts": the plural of qidh, which is the arrow before its head is fixed onto it. "We understood": we grasped it and complied. "Protruding": jutting out, not level with the row.

The obligation of straightening the rows, and that disregarding this causes discord and division. Going to great lengths in straightening the rows, as though straightening them with arrow-shafts, since an arrow is not fit for its intended purpose until it is perfectly straight.
