عَنِ الْبرَاءِ بنِ عَازِبٍ، رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُما قالَ: كانَ رسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ يَتخَلَّلُ الصَّفَّ مِنْ نَاحِيَةٍ إِلى نَاحِيَةٍ، يَمْسَحُ صُدُورَنَا، وَمَنَاكِبَنَا، ويَقُولُ: «لا تَخْتَلِفُوا فَتَخْتَلِفَ قُلُوبُكُمْ» وكَانَ يَقُولُ: «إنَّ اللّهَ وَمَلائِكَتَهُ يُصَلُّونَ على الصُّفُوفِ الأُوَلِ» رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ بإِسْنَادٍ حَسَنٍ.
Al-Bara ibn Azib (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pass through the row from one side to the other, wiping our chests and our shoulders, and saying: "Do not differ, lest your hearts differ." And he used to say: "Indeed Allah and His angels send blessings upon the first rows." Reported by Abu Dawud with a hasan (good) chain.

The obligation of straightening the rows, upon both the imam and the worshippers. The superiority of the first row, then the second, and so on down to the one before the last. The blessing from Allah, the Exalted, upon His servants is His fair praise that entails mercy, while the blessing from the angels is seeking forgiveness and supplication.
