عَنِ ابْنِ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُما: أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ قالَ: «أَقِيمُوا الصُّفُوفَ، وَحَاذُوا بَيْنَ المَنَاكِبِ، وَسُدُّوا الخَلَلَ، وَلِينُوا بِأَيْدِي إِخْوَانِكُمْ، وَلاَ تَذَرُوا فُرُجَاتٍ للشَّيْطَانِ، ومَنْ وَصَلَ صَفًّا وَصَلَهُ اللّهُ، وَمَنْ قَطَعَ صَفًّا قَطَعَهُ اللّهُ» رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ بإِسْنادٍ صَحِيحٍ.
Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Straighten the rows, align the shoulders, fill the gaps, be pliant in the hands of your brothers, and do not leave openings for Satan. Whoever joins a row, Allah will join him; and whoever cuts off a row, Allah will cut him off." Reported by Abu Dawud with a sahih (authentic) chain.
الشرح · explanation
أقيموا الصفوف: سووها. وحاذوا بين المناكب: أي اجعلوها على سمت واحد مستوية في الصف. الخلل: أي الفُرج في الصفوف. لينوا بأيدي إخوانكم: كونوا لينين منقادين لمن يقدمكم ويؤخركم في الصف لتستووا فيه. ولا تذروا: لا تتركوا. فرجات: أي مكانًا فارغًا، وذلك بأن تتراصوا في الصفوف.
"Straighten the rows": align them. "Align the shoulders": that is, set them on a single line, level within the row. "The gaps": that is, the openings in the rows. "Be pliant in the hands of your brothers": be gentle and compliant toward whoever moves you forward or back in the row so that you may be aligned in it. "And do not leave": do not leave behind. "Openings": that is, an empty space; avoid this by standing close together in the rows.

وجوب تسوية الصفوف ووصلها لسد فرجها وتكميلها بأن لا يشرع في صف حتى يكمل ما قبله. الزجر عن قطع الصفوف، بأن يقف في صف وبين يديه صف آخر ناقص أو فيه فرجة، فإهمال تسوية الصفوف وقطعها يؤدي إلى قطع المودة بين المسلمين وعنوان التفكك. أنّ في مساواة الصف تقارب قلوب المسلمين بعضهم ببعض.
The obligation of straightening the rows and joining them to close their gaps and complete them, such that one does not begin a row until the one before it is complete. Rebuke of cutting off the rows—by standing in a row while before one is another, incomplete row or one with a gap—for neglecting to straighten the rows and cutting them off leads to severing affection among the Muslims and is a mark of disunity. In the evenness of the row lies the drawing together of the Muslims' hearts to one another.
