عَنْ أَبي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ، قالَ: قالَ رسُولُ اللّهِ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ: «وَسِّطُوا الإِمَامَ، وَسُدُّوا الخَلَلَ» رَوَاهُ أَبُو دَاوُودَ.
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Place the imam in the middle, and fill the gaps." Reported by Abu Dawud.

وسطوا الإمام: أي اجعلوا موقفه في الوسط بينكم
"Place the imam in the middle": that is, make his standing position in the middle among you.

يمين الإمام وإن كان أفضل من يساره فإنه لا ينبغي أن يقف المصلون كلهم عن يمين الإمام ويعطلوا ما عن يساره. في الأمر بسد الخلل في الصلاة إشارة لتوسيع ذلك في سائر حياتنا بسد الخلل في مجتمعنا والقيام بما يغفل عنه بقية الناس من أعمال وأدوار.
Although the imam's right is more excellent than his left, the worshippers should not all stand to the imam's right and leave his left side empty. In the command to fill the gaps in the prayer there is an indication to extend this to the rest of our lives: to fill the gaps in our society and to undertake those deeds and roles which the rest of the people neglect.
