عَنْ عائِشَةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهَا: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ كَانَ يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيْنِ خَفِيفَتَيْنِ بَيْنَ النِّدَاءِ وَالإِقَامَةِ مِنْ صَلاةِ الصُّبْحِ. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ. وفي رِوَايَةٍ لَهُمَا: يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيِ الفَجْرِ، فَيُخَفِّفُهُمَا حتَّى أَقُولَ: هَل قَرَأَ فِيهِمَا بِأُمِّ القُرْآنِ؟! وفي رِوَايَةٍ لِمُسْلِمٍ: كَانَ يُصَلِّي رَكْعَتَيِ الفَجْرِ إِذَا سَمِعَ الأَذَانَ وَيُخَفِّفُهُمَا، وفي رِوَايَةٍ: إِذَا طَلَعَ الفَجْرُ.
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray two light rak'ahs between the call and the iqamah of the dawn prayer. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim). In a narration of both: He would pray the two rak'ahs of Fajr and make them so light that I would say: Did he even recite the Umm al-Qur'an in them?! In a narration of Muslim: He would pray the two rak'ahs of Fajr when he heard the adhan, and make them light; and in another narration: when dawn broke.

ركعتين خفيفتين: وذلك بتخفيف زمن القراءة والركوع والسجود بخلاف غالب عادته صلّى اللّهُ عليه وسلّم في التطويل فيها، فالخفة هنا نسبية وليس فيها إخلال بشيء من الأركان. بأمّ القرآن: هي الفاتحة، وسمّيت أمّ القرآن لاشتمالها على مجمل مقاصد القرآن.
"Two light rak'ahs": that is, by shortening the time of the recitation, the bowing, and the prostration, contrary to his usual habit (peace and blessings be upon him) of lengthening them. The lightness here is relative, and involves no deficiency in any of the pillars of the prayer. "The Umm al-Qur'an": it is al-Fatihah, so named "the Mother of the Qur'an" because it comprises the overall aims of the Qur'an.

It is recommended to make the sunnah of the dawn prayer light, in recitation and pillars, and to perform it swiftly between the adhan and the iqamah, so as to be free for the obligatory prayer and lengthen its recitation. The Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) hastening to the two sunnah rak'ahs of the dawn prayer is proof of the importance he gave them.
