عَنْ عَائِشةَ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهَا: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وسَلَّمَ كَانَ يُصَلِّي صَلاتَهُ بِاللَّيْلِ وهِيَ مُعْتَرِضَةٌ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ، فَإذَا بقِيَ الوِتْرُ أَيْقَظَهَا فَأَوْتَرَتْ. رَوَاهُ مُسْلِمٌ. وَفِي رِوَايَةٍ لَهُ: فَإذَا بَقِيَ الوِتْرُ قَالَ: «قُومِي فَأَوْتِرِي يَا عَائِشَةُ»
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would perform his night prayer while she lay stretched out in front of him; when only the witr remained, he would wake her and she would pray the witr. Reported by Muslim. In another narration of his: when only the witr remained, he would say: "Get up and pray the witr, O Aisha."

يصلي صلاته بالليل: كان أولًا يصلي في أول الليل، ثم صار يصلي في جوف الليل، ثم استقر وتره في آخر الليل عليه الصلاة والسلام في وقت التنزيل الإلهي، لما ثبت في الصحيحين وغيرهما. معترضة بين يديه: أي نائمة بينه وبين القبلة.
"He would perform his night prayer": at first he prayed at the beginning of the night, then he came to pray in the depth of the night, and finally his witr settled at the last part of the night (upon him be blessings and peace), at the time of the divine descent, as established in the two Sahihs and elsewhere. "Stretched out in front of him": that is, lying asleep between him and the qiblah.
