Umm Hani, Fakhitah bint Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with her), said: I went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the year of the Conquest and found him bathing. When he had finished his bath, he prayed eight rak'ahs, and that was during the forenoon (Duha). Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim); this is an abridgement of the wording of one of Muslim's narrations.
"The year of the Conquest": that is, the conquest of Mecca, which was in Ramadan of the eighth year after the Hijrah. "Eight rak'ahs": Abu Dawud and Ibn Khuzaymah added: "giving the salam after every two rak'ahs."
The most that the Duha prayer may be is eight rak'ahs, and that is the most excellent, as evidenced by the practice of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
