عَنْ سَالِمِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ الخَطَّابِ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُمْ، عَنْ أَبِيِه: أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ: «نِعْمَ الرَّجُلُ عَبْدُ اللّهِ لَوْ كَانَ يُصَلِّي مِنَ اللَّيْلِ» قَالَ سَالِمٌ: فَكَانَ عَبْدُ اللّهِ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ لاَ يَنَامُ مِنَ اللَّيْلِ إِلاَّ قَلِيلًا. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Salim ibn Abdullah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with them) reported from his father that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What a fine man Abdullah is, if only he would pray at night." Salim said: After that, Abdullah would not sleep at night except a little. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
قال: أي لحفصة عندما قصت عليه رؤيا رآها أخوها عبد اللّهِ بن عمر. لو كان يصلي: أي أتمنى أن يفعل ذلك حتى يكون أكثر فضلًا، وليست (لو) شرطية.
"He said": that is, to Hafsah, when she related to him a dream that her brother Abdullah ibn Umar had seen. "If only he would pray": that is, I wish that he would do so, so that he might be of greater merit; the word "if" (law) here is not conditional.
