Riyad Al Salihin

Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would not increase — in Ramadan or otherwise — beyond eleven rak'ahs. He would pray four, and do not ask about their excellence and length; then he would pray [another] four, and do not ask about their excellence and length; then he would pray three. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, do you sleep before you pray witr?" He said: "O Aisha, my eyes sleep but my heart does not sleep." Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).

"Do not ask": that is, there is no need to ask about that, given how evident it is. "Their excellence": in that they comprised the manners required in them. "You pray witr": that is, you perform the witr. "But my heart does not sleep": that is, my heart is not heedless such that sleep would overcome me and I would not wake before the time passes.

The recommendation of prolonging the night prayer and observing its manners fully, and maintaining that throughout all its rak'ahs, so that one is not energetic at its beginning and then slackens at its end. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would not increase his [night] prayer beyond eleven rak'ahs. Sleeping before witr is not disliked for one who is confident of himself that he will wake to perform it before dawn, but it is disliked for one who is not confident of that.
