عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللّهُ عَنْهُ، قَالَ: صَلَّيْتُ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَيْلَةً، فَلَمْ يَزَلْ قائِمًا حَتَّى هَمَمْتُ بِأَمْرِ سُوءٍ، قِيلَ: مَا هَمَمْتَ؟ قَالَ: هَمَمْتُ أَنْ أَجْلِسَ وَأَدَعَهُ. مُتَّفَقٌ عَلَيْهِ.
Ibn Masud (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I prayed with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) one night, and he remained standing so long that I resolved upon an evil thing. It was said: What did you resolve upon? He said: I resolved to sit down and abandon him. Agreed upon (al-Bukhari and Muslim).
الشرح · explanation
صلّيت: أي صلاة التهجد. هممت: قصدت وعزمت. أجلس وأدعه: أي أنوي مفارقته وأتمّ صلاتي منفردًا.
"I prayed": that is, the tahajjud prayer. "I resolved": I intended and determined. "To sit down and abandon him": that is, I intended to part from him and complete my prayer alone.

A demonstration of the length of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) night prayer. The permissibility of congregation in voluntary (nafl) prayer generally; following the imam is not broken merely by intending to part from him, so long as the heart has not firmly resolved upon it. The permissibility of parting from the imam on account of his lengthening the prayer, though it is better to avoid this except for a pressing necessity.
