Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: I prayed with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) one night, and he began with Surat al-Baqarah. I thought: He will bow at [the end of] a hundred [verses]; but he continued. So I thought: He will pray the whole of it in a single rak'ah; but he continued. So I thought: He will bow with it [at its end]. Then he began Surat al-Nisa' and recited it, then he began Surat Al Imran and recited it, reciting unhurriedly. Whenever he passed a verse containing glorification, he glorified [Allah]; whenever he passed a verse of asking, he asked; and whenever he passed a verse of seeking refuge, he sought refuge. Then he bowed and began to say, "Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent," and his bowing was about the length of his standing. Then he said, "Allah hears the one who praises Him; our Lord, to You be praise," then he stood for a long time, close to the length of his bowing. Then he prostrated and said, "Glory be to my Lord, the Most High," and his prostration was close to the length of his standing. Reported by Muslim.
"He began with al-Baqarah": that is, after reciting al-Fatihah; he did not mention al-Fatihah, relying on the listener's understanding of that. "He continued": he carried on reciting. "He will bow with it": he will bow upon its completion. "Unhurriedly": that is, he articulated the letters distinctly and gave them their due in pronouncing them from the mouth.

A demonstration of the length and excellence of the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) night prayer. The permissibility of reciting in the second rak'ah a surah that precedes the one recited in the first, though it is preferable to recite the surahs of the Qur'an according to their order in the Mushaf. Some scholars forbade this and answered the hadith with various interpretations, among them that it occurred before the [divine] fixing of the order of the Mushaf.
